Situated in the Region of Lika, Plitvice Lakes are truly a small piece of Heaven on Earth. Plitvice lakes is the most famous national park in Croatia, and with its 96 waterfalls and 16 lakes of River Korana, many influents and streams, represents a miraculous complex of forests and natural diversity. It is the oldest national park in Croatia, declared in 1949 and is registered in the UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1979 year. Park occupies 30 000 hectares, of which 200 hectares are covered with lakes, divided in Upper and Lower Lakes. Their characteristic is water saturation with dissolved calcium carbonate that in combination with the force of water dispersion creates travertine.
It is not just about the relaxing sound of water and stunning landscapes, Plitvice also provide you a cultural elevation giving you the chance to learn about life and traditions of the people living in the area. National Park is inhabited by many protected plant and animal species so all the visitors are kindly asked to respect the rules concerning the ecology, flora and fauna. The tour around the waterfalls starts on foot over wooden bridges and footpaths through the unique landscapes, then goes a part with tourist train, and also an electric boat tour across the biggest lake -Kozjak.
